The Lifeline That Just Got Cut
It started quietly. No press conference. No formal announcement to customers.
On April 16, 2026, MTN Nigeria slipped a notice into a corporate filing on the Nigerian Exchange. Xtratime the service that let millions borrow airtime or data and pay back later was suspended. The next day, Airtel followed.
For the telecom companies, this was a compliance decision. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) had introduced new Digital Lending Regulations (DEON) in July 2025, requiring stricter oversight of credit services. Telcos needed to register and follow transparent lending rules. MTN and Airtel chose to pause rather than risk penalties.
"It's more than suicidal," one user told the Nigerian Tribune. "The effectiveness of the borrowing plan is indescribable and relieving."
What was lost
- The market woman who needs to call her supplier but is short N50 β stranded.
- The student who ran out of data but needs to submit an assignment β cut off.
- The bike rider whose customer wants to confirm a pickup location β silent.
A Federal High Court in Lagos has since issued an interim injunction stopping the FCCPC from enforcing the regulations. But the damage is done. The service remains suspended.
The trillion-naira question
In 2023, a major telecommunications company repatriated over $2 billion (approximately N1.5 trillion) in revenue from Nigeria to its home country.
That is trillion with a 'T'.
To put it in perspective: that money could have built thousands of kilometers of fibre optic cable, provided free Wi-Fi to every university in the country, or subsidized data for every low-income household.
Instead, it left.
Nigerians paid that money. Every recharge card. Every data subscription. Every "borrow and repay" loan. And what did we get in return?

The technology your phone already has

- Projects like MajiNet are building solar-powered, offline mesh networks enabling real-time messaging without internet, SIM cards, or grid power with nodes communicating up to 10 km apart.
Let me be honest: mesh has flaws
- Short range. 10β100 meters. Concrete kills it.
- Critical mass. Two people is useless. A hundred is powerful.
- Battery drain. 4β6 hours on older phones.
- No video calls. Text and images only.
- No internet. Pure mesh is local only.
- Android works better. iPhone restrictions remain.
What mesh is NOT
Mesh is not a replacement for MTN, Glo, or Airtel. It is a supplement a backup, a local alternative.
Keep your telco for calls, browsing, video, and emergency services. Use mesh for neighbors, offline chats, and when the network goes down.
